NJ fishing licenses and trout stamps: what you need

Start with age and residency

For an ordinary freshwater trip, New Jersey residents ages 16–69 need a fishing license. Visiting anglers need one from age 16 onward. The state’s rules also cover privately owned fresh waters.

The main age groups are:

• Under 16: no freshwater fishing license or trout stamp required.
• NJ residents, 16–69: a fishing license, plus a trout stamp when fishing for trout or salmon.
• NJ residents, 70 and older: carry acceptable proof of age; neither document is required.
• Nonresidents, 16 and older: a license and, for trout or salmon, a stamp. The resident exemption at 70 does not apply.

Does catch and release need a trout stamp?

Yes, if you fall within the age and residency groups that require one. The stamp requirement covers fishing for trout, even when you intend to release your catch.

Decide what you plan to target before buying tackle. A license question is easier to settle at home than beside a stocked pond.

Buy through the state, then keep it handy

Use NJDEP’s online sales link or an authorized license agent. Display the license on your outer clothing while fishing. Annual licenses and trout stamps expire on December 31.

Finish the plan with a water

Save the water you want to visit, find its public entrance, and open the regulation entry for that exact lake or river section. Keep those links together with your license information.

If you’re bringing someone new to fishing, sort out their documents at the same time. That leaves the first morning for rigging rods and finding a comfortable place to cast.
