The section matters as much as the river

A familiar river name can lead to several regulation entries. Find the two boundaries around the stretch you intend to fish, then read the row for your visit date. Keep that entry open while choosing tackle.

Year-round and seasonal TCAs differ

The 2026 digest lists the Point Mountain stretch of the Musconetcong and a Toms River stretch as year-round TCAs. Pequest and Pequannock have seasonal TCAs, with tackle and harvest rules that change during the spring.

For Point Mountain, match the stretch between the Penwell Road and Point Mountain Road bridges. For Pequest, use the hatchery-area section identified in the seasonal table. Read every restriction attached to that row, including stocking-day exceptions.

Ken Lockwood Gorge has catch-and-release rules

Ken Lockwood Gorge appears under Catch and Release Areas in the 2026 digest. Trout must be released; artificial lures or flies with barbless hooks are required, with at most three hook points in total. Bait and concentrated bait scents are prohibited.

You may still see “TCA Gorge” in older map labels. Use the current catch-and-release entry when planning the trip.

Pack for the stretch you’ve chosen

Lay out the lures and tackle you plan to carry. Compare them with the section’s restrictions before they go into your bag. Keep a second water in mind if your planned route or fishing method does not fit.

Recheck the year on any saved article. New Jersey changed several trout rules for 2026, including the general preseason treatment of lakes and ponds. A spring plan from a previous season can lead you to the wrong conclusion.
